Changelings, Compass, PSI, etc!

Thanks to all who came to last week's sell-out performance of the Changelings! If you liked that, please come to my latenight cabaret Eve Speaks from the Garden of Eden next Saturday Dec. 3, at 10pm in the Round Studio of Aberystwyth Arts Centre in Wales, as part of Aber Storytelling Festival! Tickets here .

I've just confirmed that yes, indeed, Ten Cents a Dance will be appearing as part of PSI 18 in Leeds 2012! At Compass Live Arts Festival this weekend, I'm planning on networking my way into some sort of relationship with a local Leeds-based arts organization, with the hopes that Ten Cents can appear both within the conference and in partnership with a city initiative! There are lots of cool things happening in Leeds at the moment, including the TimeBank I recently posted about, and I'm hoping to meet some interesting folks there.

Although it hasn't been confirmed yet, Ten Cents will also hopefully be appearing in a city near you very soon - there's rumors in the pipeline but I can't publicize until it's confirmed. More soon!

Autumn/Winter Dates Announced!

I'll be performing in a variety of variety shows over these brisk coming months .  . .

As the "Fairy One" and live sound effects board in a magic lantern show, The Changelings

"Step inside The Magical Illuminarium for a tale of misfits and magic, of Hairy Fairies and Fairy Cows, of Twins and Y Tylwyth Teg! Two Changelings, brought up in isolation, travel through their lives unsure of whether they are Human or Fair Folk, male or female, uncertain of their place in a changing world, searching for love but unable to know who or what they should love. Follow the Folklorist and the Fairy One as they weave together new stories with traditional tales of the Welsh Fair Folk, with over 300 original projected paintings of real, yes real fairies, and live music and songs in a phantasmagorical Phairy Cabaret...."

Eve Speaks from the Garden of Eden - a latenight cabaret
"Young American storyteller and singer-of-all-trades Alison Matthews presents ‘Eve Speaks – a musical cabaret’. From the mind of God came dust. From the loins of dust came Adam. From the belly of Adam came Eve. But what came next? Please come to a hybricolage musical cabaret celebrating Eve, arousal, and the importance of asking questions."

Time Bank feature in the NY Times

Community Connections Time Bank

"Several TimeBank members told me that activities gradually cease being services performed and become instead hours with friends. "

"What makes a time bank different is that the purpose of the connection is ostensibly to give help — something that makes a lot of people more comfortable and confident.  “I’m a shy person and I have a problem with receiving,” said Gradess.  Even if you happen to be the one receiving services in any particular transaction, you know you will be giving help to someone else."

Electric Picnic round-up

We confused people, bamboozled people, and introduced people to the wonders of a black lace bodystocking with silver hotpants. While the rain and mass audience hangover prevented too much playtime, highlights included singing to a group of lads (yes, you) after a kiss on the cheek, and rewriting part of the Book of Matthew for two family men in exchange for their must-see gig list.

The best part of the Picnic, however, was chatting to people about the project, handing out our cards/receipts, and - yes - taping green fig leaves to our nether regions. I think the material went over people's heads a bit (a subversive take on religion through a structure attempting to be subversive towards capitalist practices - too much? ;) ), but we made people stop and think, and thank you to all the people who stopped by our little stand to ask: "What is this?" Asking makes the heart grow fonder.

For those of you who would like to see the full Eve she-bang (pun intended), please come to:

GREEN MAN: Shoutout to our Patrons, Protagonists, and other micro-audiences

Thanks to all who visited our market stall at Green Man Festival's Einstein's Garden. Our pitch was:

"inspired by a PhD enquiry into embodied economics: in a time of recession, when looking at how and what we value as a society and as individuals is increasingly necessary, this project helps us look at how we inscribe actions and services with these values.

By setting up a stall in a Farmer's Market aesthetic, Ten Cents a Dance has in the past brought together artists, all 'selling their wares' - different 'price lists' of actions... Each encounter invites the audience/consumer to sit down and engage with the performer one-on-one, putting a whole new spin and 'getting to know your local grower.' "

For this festival, we offered you the chance to be our Patron Saint of Play by commissioning a one-page play to be written and worked on on the spot, an audiovisual handwashing experience, and various engagements with stories, music, and texts. We broke our backs during our 8-10 hour shifts on the market, but we came away from the experience 5 quid richer and with renewed interest in audience interaction.

If you received a receipt in the form of a small card, with a statement on the back, but didn't get a chance to respond or inquire about the project, please leave feedback on this blog, and feel free to ask questions. This is a research project for me and every little thing you say is helpful in its own way.

Ten Cents a Dance / Eve Speaks at the ELECTRIC PICNIC!

Come one, come all, to see Eve in her burlesque finery, kinky fig leaves and all. For Ten Cents a Dance, Eve will be offering re-writings of the Bible, performing semi-biographic songs about the perils of Eden, and autographing apples.

To trade Eve for her wares, please bring small tradeable objects of use: such as buttons, cigarettes, or cans of beer. Since getting kicked out of Eden, she works late shifts at sleazy bars and she could use your support.
